6 Lies You Had to Unlearn to Start Healing

Healing is not a straight line. It’s a tender, winding path, sometimes quiet, sometimes full of ache, but always yours. And while each journey is personal, many of us unknowingly carry the same stories. Quiet lies we’ve been taught to believe. They settle deep within us, shaping how we see ourselves and the pain we’ve lived through.

To begin healing, we must gently name these stories for what they are and begin, slowly, to let them go.

Lie One: You are broken beyond repair

You are not broken. Even on your hardest days, even when the weight feels too heavy to carry. Pain may change you, but it does not destroy your wholeness. The cracks you carry are not proof of failure, they are where the light enters. You are still here, still trying. And that is something sacred.

Lie Two: You have to do it all alone

There is strength in being seen. In asking for help. Healing doesn’t mean walking through the fire alone. It means letting someone walk beside you. It means reaching out, and allowing the soft hands of friendship, care, or even strangers to remind you that you have the strength to walk through the flames.

Lie Three: Your feelings are too much

You are not too much. Your emotions, in all their intensity, are not something to be ashamed of. They are messengers. Invitations. Proof that you are alive and feeling and human. Let yourself feel them. Let them rise and fall like waves.

Lie Four: Your past defines you

You are more than what happened to you. Your past may live in your body, it may echo through certain moments—but it is not the full story. You are still becoming. Still unfolding. You are allowed to rewrite your narrative. To grow beyond the pages that once held you.

Lie Five: Taking care of yourself is selfish

Choosing yourself is never selfish. Resting, saying no, listening to your needs, these are acts of care, not indulgence. When you tend to your own heart, you create space to be more present, more loving, more real. You cannot give from a soul that’s running on empty. You matter, too.

Lie Six: Healing should be quick or easy

Healing is not linear. It is not predictable. Some days it may feel like progress, others like unraveling. And that’s okay. Healing takes time. It asks for patience, softness, and a willingness to begin again, again, and again. Trust that your pace is enough. You’re not behind. You’re on your own timeline.

Unlearning these lies is not always easy. But it’s a beginning. A soft turning toward yourself. A way to say, I am worthy of peace. I am allowed to heal.

Let that be your truth. Let that be your light.
